Chapter 1

“I don’t love you anymore,” Martin said standing nervously at the kitchen door staring down at his car keys clutched in his large sweating hand.

Gabrielle imagined her heart being ripped from her body and shattered, as the broken pieces fell onto the cold wooden floor before her.

“Who is she? “Gabrielle said, fighting to hold back the tears forming in her light grey eyes.

Surprised crosses his overweight face, sweat rolled down his forehead from his thin greying hairline.ten years married, did he think she was that naïve, she thought with disgust. Struggling to breathe ‘Keep it together Gabrielle, breathe’ she thought to herself.

“Emm, her name’s Lorena,” he said looking down at his black work shoes, a guilty brown aura emanating from his body.

“Ok, we need to talk about finances before you leave” Disgusted, she spoke with a confidence she didn’t have, her soul shattered and splintered inside.

“Gabbi! wake up, stop dreaming, the plane’s about to land in Glasgow! “Sophie, Gabbi’s younger sister’s excited voice woke Gabbi from her reverie.

It had been two and a half years since she’d thrown her two-timing ex-out onto the street. She still thought about that night. No more! She vowed and sighed. Living alone in her large three-bedroom apartment suited her just fine. There had been no news of her ex in two years, she still couldn’t get a divorce as the private investigators she’d hired couldn’t find him, and to her dismay, the divorce papers lay unsigned.

Gabbi and her younger sister were on the trip of a lifetime they’d been planning to visit Scotland for years.  She’d grown up and lived in Boston all of her life; loved the city and the people. After her parents tragically died in a car accident, ten-year-old Gabbi and her five-year-old sister Sophie had gone to stay with their maternal grandmother. Her older half-brother Michael served in the US Navy and couldn’t look after them.

Living with their grandmother was eye-opening, she’d told both sisters the tales of their Scottish ancestry. She weaved the tragic and heroic stories of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce & Rob Roy. So, Gabbi and her twenty-five-year-old sister Sophie were now heading to the Highlands and Islands of Bonnie Scotland for three fun-filled weeks.

Scotland, she thought excitedly as she walked confidently out into the airport security lane, letter, ID, and passport at the ready. She knew this would take a while, her family suffered from adermatoglyphia, and travelling to any airport in the world was a problem, especially when you had no fingerprints.

Two hours later Gabbi and Sophie walked out of the terminal into the beautiful May afternoon, smiling and laughing as she walked over to the taxi rank. The tension lifted from her shoulders.  She needed this vacation. It would feel great to get to their first hotel to change out of their travel clothes. She could do this; she could have fun and explore her ancestry. The taxi driver jumped out of his cab and came around to lift their luggage, “All right, ladies, jump in ………… Where to? “

“The Crowne Plaza, Glasgow please, “Gabbi said with a huge smile, excited for the first time in decades.
